ILL.

An acronym.

I Love Living.

I Love Learning.

Learning and teaching have always been central tenets of ILL DOOTS’ artistic philosophy.

We believe in being lifelong learners and letting curiosity lead us. The flip side of that is knowing that it is our responsibility to pay it forward, passing on the knowledge we have acquired to other curious folks, young and old.

As we graduated from college and began to navigate life as professionals in our fields, inevitably we all found ourselves teaching between gigs to help make ends meet. More than a way to pay our bills, it was a source of great joy and fulfillment. Then, it occurred to us to teach together. In planning our I Love Living Tour in 2014 we reached out to churches, schools, and community institutions of all kinds to schedule educational performance workshops in the cities we would be performing in. Since that tour, educational outreach has become a central part of our mission and we recognize the value of sharing the things we've learned over a decade of collaboration and relationship-building. Every residency and workshop is different because we believe that every group that we work with deserves a bespoke experience tailored to their interests and needs.

We would love to share what we've learned with you and your community! Reach out to see what we can offer.

Testimonials:

In having ILL DOOTS visit our class, the students are given a chance to interact with artists that they may otherwise not have had an opportunity to interact with. In a time when students are really struggling, both in school and beyond school, this opportunity was treasured. I saw students stretch beyond their comfort zones and speak in front of the class, share a work of their own with a professional, or share an opinion with their peers and an artist. These experiences are rare and will never be forgotten. Moments that stick with me are my one student who is working through trauma going out of his way to decode lyrics, or my 2 students working together to play the drums for the song they created with ILL DOOTS, when they had never played the drums before. Not only did the class learn more about the artists who visited, but they also learned more about their classmates, and most importantly, they learned a lot about themselves.
— Sarah Gallagher [teacher at Bayard Rustin High School]
I felt sad because it was over. I also felt proud.
— Kristin (Student at HMS School)
“I loved the energy from the band. They really were on 100 the whole time during both days, even when we as a class were a little stand-off-ish and mellow.”
— Anonymous Student (Bayard Rustin High School)

Our hourly rate for workshops starts at $750/hour (which covers all four members of the band, travel, and equipment).
